Sea, sun, condom!

Holidays are just around the corner! Opportunities arise to meet new and interesting people; the time has come for summer fun and – hooray! – the adventure is about to begin. When engaging in sexual relations, the first rule to safe sex is the use of condoms for both vaginal and, particularly, anal intercourse. They are also recommended for oral sex.

The risk of contracting infections such as HIV, hepatitis and other sexually transmitted diseases is high, especially when travelling in foreign countries where the number of such infections has increased.

Before diving into an intimate sexual encounter with a person you do not know very well, always protect yourself and use a condom! Life is too short to take the chance of being infected with a sexually transmitted disease for the rest of your life because of a hot, one-night stand. It is true that sex is a wonderful thing, but it will be even better and more carefree with adequate protection. It is a must that you talk to your partner about the use of contraception. This is a particularly sensitive topic of conversation at the beginning of a relationship. This is also the right time to insist on using a condom because you do not know your partner yet and it is not written on his/her forehead what diseases he/she has been infected with (this can only be determined through testing). The use of condoms should be a prerequisite before engaging in sexual activity.

Today condoms are available in all possible lengths, diameters, shapes, flavours, different thicknesses, etc. The supply is plentiful and diverse, and condoms may in fact enrich your sex life.

Do not allow passion to cloud your mind – be responsible for yourself and others.

HIV infection is only one of many sexually transmitted diseases that you can contract when making love without a condom. Therefore, enjoy the holidays, but use your head. Do not forget to use protection!

WHY SHOULD I TAKE THE HIV TEST? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 April 2013 15:49

Have you ever thought to take a HIV test? Why not? Today it is very simple. In Slovenia confidential testing covered by insurance is possible at the chosen family physician at the patient’s request. In addition, it is available at special testing sites - sometimes free of charge, sometimes on a self-payment basis. Voluntary free testing with consultation is also available at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Fever Conditions of the Ljubljana University Medical Centre. So, be responsible! Take a test!

Less than one person per 1000 residents is infected with HIV in Slovenia, which is relatively low in comparison to the majority of the European Union countries; however, the number of infected persons is rapidly increasing. Compared to numerous other European countries, Slovenia conducts a relatively small number of HIV infection tests – If HIV infection is detected too late, the opportunity for timely and more successful treatment is not used; moreover, the risk of early AIDS development and death from AIDS increases.

Transmission through unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, oral), which is the most common method of transmission, can be prevented by correct use of condoms and lubricants.

A person infected with HIV may look perfectly healthy for several years, unaware of being infected. At the initial stage, infected persons usually have a fever, they sweat, have muscle pains, swollen lymph glands; they suffer from nausea or diarrhoea, often develop a reddish rash and small wounds on the skin, in the mouth or on the genitals. Most sympthoms pass in 2 to 4 weeks, while fatigue may last for several months.

If you suspect that you have been exposed to infection with HIV, you must get tested and inform your sexual partner about it. HIV infection can be treated effectively, but the treatment must start as soon as possible.

SEX, DRUGS & ALCOHOL PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 February 2013 13:37

Sex & drugs & rock 'n' roll – it may sound like fun, but is it really?

It is not uncommon for alcohol and drug use to be linked to sex. Unfortunately, young people increasingly report bad experiences encountered in situations involving the combination glorified by the song. v opevani situaciji.

For example, one person believed that using alcohol or drugs would make them "cool", a rebel, while in reality they lost control of the situation and exposed themselves to various risks.

You might think it is fun and you might feel more relaxed and confident, more like your peers, when using various substances, but one can quickly go too far with alcohol or drugs and the fun is quickly ruined.

Sometimes there will be just vomiting and nausea, maybe a minor embarrassment, which will give you a headache in the morning; however, many stories are much sadder.

When we are drunk or otherwise incapable of clear judgement, many things can happen that can lead to serious consequences – unwanted sexual intercourse, even unwanted pregnancy, various sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, violence, car and other accidents, and also a growing number of unwanted publications of information, photographs and videos on the internet.

If you have felt such a temptation or had a bad experience, it is best that you talk about it with an adult you trust! If no one else is available, you can always turn to your family doctor, who will certainly be able to advise you, or to one of the following organisations, which IN SLOVENIA help young people in similar situations:
