HIV testing is recommended for:

• all persons with symptoms, health problems or health conditions which may indicate HIV infection or AIDS,
• patients of STD clinics,
• patients with symptoms and health problems of STDs,
• injecting drug users,
• partners of persons with recognised HIV infections,
• all persons who believe that they have been exposed to HIV infection risk, at their own request.

In Slovenia confidential testing covered by insurance is possible at the chosen family physician at the patient’s request. In addition, it is available at special testing sites - sometimes free of charge, sometimes on a self-payment basis.

Voluntary free testing with consultation is also available at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Fever Conditions of the Ljubljana University Medical Centre.
