Can STDs be contracted through oral sex?

The possibility of contracting HIV through oral sexual intercourse is considerably lower than in anal sex but still possible. The risk of infection exists, especially if one of the partners has wounds in his or her mouth. If an injury of the mucous membrane occurs in the oral cavity or throat, the risk of infection grows further.

An infection can occur if one of the partners has injured genitals or they became injured during intercourse. In addition, we must be aware that HIV virus is also found in pre-ejaculatory fluid (precum), so infection may occur even without ejaculation in the mouth. Ejaculation outside mouth reduces the risk of infection only partially. At the same time, there is no considerable difference as regards the risk of infection if the semen is swallowed or spat out.

A condom is the best protection! In oral sex, too!

Oral sexual intercourse with an infected person also brings the risk of infection with syphilis (Treponema pallidum), Hepatitis B, Chlamydial infection (Chlamydia trachomatis) and gonorrhoea (Neisseria gonorrhoea).
