Safety of procedures of skin, mucous membrane, cartilage or muscle piercing

In Slovenia, the Rules on Minimum Sanitary and Health Requirements for the Provision of Services of Hygiene Care and Other Related Activities must be observed in carrying out procedures involving the piercing of skin, mucous membranes, cartilage or muscles.

In procedures of piercing skin, mucous membranes, cartilage or muscles, the use of sterile instruments and single-use gloves is obligatory; before piercing, the surface of the body must be disinfected.

Products used in tattooing and similar procedures must be safe for the user. Products must be sterile and supplied in a vessel preserving the sterility of products until the moment of their use. If single-use packaging is not used, the non-contamination of products must be guaranteed throughout their use.

A provider of tattooing services must acquaint the user with potential health risks resulting from the procedure, and with further care after tattooing and other similar procedures.

A notification with the following information must be visibly displayed in the waiting room:

  • list of procedures performed by the operator,
  • health risks for users in the provision of services (potential for the transmission of agents of communicable diseases, e.g. HBV, HCV, HIV, appearance of allergic reactions, occurrence of granuloma and keloidal formations),
  • care necessary until the healing of wounds,
  • conditions for reversibility of individual procedures.

Children under 15 years of age may be provided the tattooing, piercing and other similar services only with the consent and in the presence of their parents.
