The history of addressing HIV infection and AIDS in Slovenia

As early as 1985, the Ministry of Health and Social Security established a consultative body for the purpose of examining the HIV/AIDS issue.

The most important activities and achievements of prevention and control of the HIV infection/AIDS include:

  • promotion of safer sexual behaviour among the entire population, especially among young people,
  • prevention and treatment of illicit drug addiction,
  • harm reduction activities for IDU,
  • free confidential or anonymous testing for HIV infection, with counselling,
  • laboratory diagnostics of HIV infection,
  • health care of the infected,
  • safe implementation of all procedures in health care organisations, including the provision of safe blood and blood products, and
  • epidemiological monitoring of epidemic development.

For several years, the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia at the head of the public health care network and including regional health care institutes has been committed, in partnership with numerous governmental and especially non-governmental organisations, to the preparation of expert positions, materials, coordination and organisation, as well as support for numerous activities throughout the country.

Non-governmental organisations and other interested groups successfully participate in numerous activities, such as awareness-raising, counselling and promotion of safe sex. Men having sexual intercourses with men have responded themselves by actions for the promotion of safer sex.

The campaign on World AIDS Day has become the key mechanism for supporting civil society in integration in common efforts.
